TASTING NOTES
Drawing inspiration from a refined Left-Bank Bordeaux blend, 2019 Caravan commands attention with a core of mouthwatering raspberry and black plum fruit while baking spices of cinnamon and nutmeg swirl on the palate. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the way with its plush, velvety texture while Merlot and Cabernet Franc add savory top notes of bay leaf, hawthorn, and sandalwood. A flourish of rich, round fruits sweep across the midpalate, then culminate in an aromatic finish accentuated by dark chocolate reminiscent of a fine dusting of cocoa powder.
 
VINIFICATION
With meticulous attention to detail, Caravan is hand-harvested, clusters are hand-sorted twice before and after de-stemming. The grapes were cold soaked for 4 days then fermented in small closed topped tanks, with gentle pump-overs for optimal color extraction and tannin management. The wine was aged for 20 months, in a combination of 70% new French and European oak barrels. The wine was minimally handled through bottling.

The blend started by barrel sampling through 16 different lots of Zinfandel and choosing two that were exemplary of the varietal and vintage. The Costa Zin was selected for its acidity, red fruit and spicy pepper with an elegant finish. The Burney Mettler was the opposite - big dark fruit with firm tannins and bold structure. The wines were then blended equally. In the cellar, Klinker Brick added their barrel fermented Syrah to bring additional depth and toasty vanilla aromas. Cabernet was then incorporated, which encouraged the reemergence of dark fruits and round tannins. Finally, Petite Sirah was added to enhance color and the structure integrity of the blend as well as give the wine aromas of blueberries with a hint of licorice.

The 2022 Poet’s Leap is sourced from old vine Riesling grown at Sagemoor’s Gamache Vineyard. Planted in the mid-1980s, this is a cooler site than other parts of the Columbia Valley. Riesling grown here is notable for its bright acidity and appealing citrus character. A small amount ofBacchus Vineyard’s German clone Riesling and Yakima Valley’s DuBrul Vineyard grapes round out the blend, adding minerality, stone fruit, and heightened aromatics to the finished wine.
