19%

The first vintage of Broadbent port was produced in 1994, when Bartholomew Broadbent, after spearheading the port revival in the U.S. and Canada, launched his own brand. That inaugural vintage was voted best-in-show at a comprehensive tasting of vintage port during the Aspen Food & Wine Classic. Broadbent port is made, to Broadbent’s specifications, by the esteemed winemaker Dirk Niepoort.

TASTING NOTES: Good depth of color. The best tawnies show some good fruit on the nose. The palate is rich, long and deep. Serve at room temperature or on the rocks. Can be kept open for several months.

FOOD PAIRINGS: Due to its sweet to semi-sweet character, nutty nuances, dried apricots, and spiced toffee aromatics, Tawny Ports are a natural pairing for all sorts of nutty delights. Think pecan pie, almond biscotti, or regionally-inspired Portuguese salted almond cake, or caramel covered cheesecake.

Broadbent Rainwater Madeira Port, NV (375ml)

Portugal, (Madeira DOC)
98% Tinta Negra, 2% other regional red varieties
19%

Begun in 1996, Broadbent Madeira was inspired by Bartholomew Broadbent’s father, Michael Broadbent, who called Madeira his “desert island wine,” and who played a crucial role in sourcing the wines and establishing the blends. Bartholomew Broadbent, who spent more than a decade reintroducing Madeira to the U.S. market, was determined to create a line of Madeiras to compete with the best in the world.

TASTING NOTES: The Rainwater Madeira has a light, toffee-scented bouquet with hints of creme brulee. There are subtle notes of marzipan, raisin and fresh fig that are well-defined and become voluminous with aeration. The palate is sweet and spicy on the entry. It is understated at first with smoked walnut, nougat, cumin and Chinese 5-spice and it builds gently towards a harmonious, beautifully balanced finish with traces of red chillies, dried honey and walnuts.

FOOD PAIRINGS: Fatty meats, creamy soups, custards, souffles and rich cheeses. This acidity also helps Madeira work with citrus in some sauces and compotes.
